How to get started with rock climbing

Rock climbing is undoubtedly a daunting activity to approach as a beginner, but with the right preparation and mindset, you will have fun and progress on your journey happily and safely. Here’s a roadmap on how to get started…

Indoor climbing

Climbing walls offer a safe environment with padded floors and guidance on fundamental skills to help give you the confidence to progress, whether that be in rope climbing or bouldering.

Taking classes

Usually a climbing gym will offer beginner classes to teach you the fundamentals. This is highly recommended to build your ability and confidence, and can also be a great way to make friends.

Joining a club

Getting together with other budding climbers is going to help a lot. You can pick up advice on techniques and equipment, keep each other motivated, and have fun.

Equipment

Most gyms will have you covered for a small fee, but over time you will want to invest in the basics of your own gear. This will include – boots, harnesses, a bag and a helmet at the very least.

Work on your strength

Climbing is hard physical work that requires whole body strength. Because of this, you’ll benefit from exercises to improve core and upper body strength and flexibility. This should start with stretching, and a combination of calisthenics and body weight exercises should stand you in good stead.

Gradually increase the difficulty and take things outside

When you feel ready, and confident in your abilities, it’ll be time to take things outdoors. Start with climbs that are well within your capabilities and gradually increase the ambition levels when you feel confident in yourself.
